About the District

The Croton-Harmon School District owns its own fleet of buses. Transportation services are personal and efficient.

A personalized approach to teaching is paramount to the success of the Croton-Harmon School District.  Small class size and an outstanding faculty contribute to this achievement.

The district has also been recognized by the state and nation for its outstanding programs and services.  Both the elementary and middle schools have been named “Schools of Excellence” by the US Department of Education, and the high school was selected as a Compact Partnership School by the NYS Education Department; it served as a model and pilot school as new state standards and assessments were developed with higher expectations for student performance.  The high school has also been recognized for its positive reforms in nationally published books on education.

The district’s over 1600 students attend Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School (CET), Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School (PVC) and Croton-Harmon High School (CHHS).  The district office is also located on the CET campus.

A challenging curriculum and a variety of teaching strategies are used to meet the individual needs of each student.  Both traditional and innovative, research-based practices are blended to strengthen and enhance student learning.  The district explores new educational efforts through the Coalition of Essential Schools, the Columbia Reading and Writing Project and other school reform organizations.

Learning expectations are defined in written form at each grade level and subject area so both students and parents know what to anticipate.  Traditional standardized tests, performance-based tests and individual student work portfolios are all used to measure a student’s accomplishments.

A strong literacy program includes literature and skills-based programs to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.  The district endeavors to graduate competent communicators, researchers and problem solvers.

The district provides a full complement of services to each school to ensure that all student needs are being met.  These include guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers, speech therapists and resource room teachers.

Other learning experiences are also available, including athletics, internships, clubs, and musical groups (choruses, bands and strings groups).  Exciting after-school and summer programs with classes in science, languages, chess, drawing, Taekwondo, and lots more, are available to elementary school children.  An extensive adult education program features courses in computers, cooking, art, fitness and foreign languages, among many others.

Parents and community members are involved in school activities, as volunteers in the schools or on advisory committees, such as the Long Range Planning Committee which has helped to plan for continued district growth and improvement.  Other advisory committees address the arts, health, curriculum studies (i.e. foreign language) and transportation.  A building planning council in each school plays a significant role in the process of shared decision making which focuses on the needs of each school and has teacher, administrator, parent and student representatives.  The school district serves as a gathering spot not only for students and parents but also for all community members who use the buildings for a variety of events.

Parents, students, professionals and community members take great pride in, and support, the Croton-Harmon School District.
